YEREVAN -- Armenian authorities are stepping up security after a wave of cyberattacks on government websites, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reports.
The attacks included the posting of a picture of the Azerbaijani army officer who ax-murdered an Armenian colleague during a 2004 NATO training course in Hungary on the state revenue committee website.
Ara Saghatelian, head of the Armenian president's Center for Public Relations and Information, told RFE/RL on August 19 that the attack took place on August 10 and prompted new "security standards."
A state-run Internet task force was created in April to monitor cybersecurity, but government information technology consultant Garegin Chukaszian says the team can only "patch up" problems.
"There is no approach that would enable us to have full information about what's going on in cyberspace and prepare for that accordingly," Chukaszian said.
Ruben Muradian, deputy director of the cybersecurity firm SmartTech, told RFE/RL that in Armenia security is too often "left to the enthusiasm and skills of individuals."
