Armenian Politician Warns President Not To Abuse Resources

YEREVAN -- Yerevan mayoral candidate Artsvik Minasian has warned that President Serzh Sarkisian's Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) must not abuse its "administrative resources" during the election campaign or on voting day, RFE/RL’s Armenian Service reported.

Several pro-opposition newspapers have reported in recent weeks that school principals and public institutions in the capital were told to submit lists of their employees and family members who have pledged to vote for the HHK in the May 31 elections.

Mayoral candidate Gagik Tsarukian, a wealthy businessman whose Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) holds three cabinet posts in Sarkisian's government, downplayed the impact of such resources on the outcome of the election.

Tsarukian said that regardless of how administrative resources are used, voters will choose a candidate "whose programs and actions he knows."

He added that his party, the second-largest in parliament, is "ready to cooperate not only with our coalition partners but also with the opposition."
