ALMATY -- The wife of the arrested chief of Kazakhstan's uranium producing giant was prevented from leaving Kazakhstan on June 13, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Dzhamilya Dzhakisheva was on her way to the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, to visit her parents, but Kazakh border guards did not allow her to leave the Kazakh-Kyrgyz border.

Dzhakisheva says she was not allowed to cross the border due to the arrest of her husband, former Kazatomprom President Mukhtar Dzhakishev, who along with his associates was detained by the Kazakh National Security Committee (KNB) last month.

They were charged with financial mismanagement and theft.

The Kazakh opposition says the arrests are politically motivated.

Dzhakishev is a close business partners of fugitive Kazakh banker and politician Mukhtar Ablyazov.

Dzhakisheva said last week that she has received threats from KNB agents who urged her "not to make too much noise regarding her husband's arrest."
