Azerbaijan Unfurls Huge National Flag

TEXT SIZE - +

With much pomp, the Azerbaijani government has unfurled a huge new flag, one of the largest in the world. (Watch the video above.) According to the AzerTAC agency, it's 70 meters high and 35 wide, a whopping great 2,450 square meters.

From AzerTAC:

The national flag was brought to the square. The President raised the flag as a military orchestra played Azerbaijan`s national anthem.

The flag-raising ceremony featured a documentary film about the construction of the National Flag Square and the role of the national flag in establishing and strengthening of the national solidarity.

The event ended with a superb laser-show and fireworks.

The Israelis apparently have the biggest, though. More photos and videos here.

One day Azerbaijan will raise their flag over Karabakh, over Shusha.

Azerbaijan's flag stood only one day, what a shame! And how they hope that one day their flag will raise over Karabakh. Azerbaijan's president has spent 20 million US dollars for raising their flag for 2 days, but many of his people live in poor conditions.

Correction, it is not Shusha. It is Shushi. Yes, Azerbaijan will raise another white flag in Shushi just like the one they raised during the battle of Shushi when they fled like scared weasels.

The Azeri readers of RFERL should stop making wise cracks about raising Azeri flags over Shushi and concentrate on asking their government why millions of dollars are being spent to erect the world's largest flag or $15 million dollars to buy flowers to celebrate Heydar Aliev's birthday, even though he is long dead, when 42% of Azerbaijan's population lives under the poverty line. This is visible plunderring. The corruption involved in building the highway between Baku airport and downtown is not visible to many citizens of the country. The project's budget has been exponentially inflated with nepotism and theft. Fix your contry first and then focus on taking over all of the South Caucasus.

Some updates: the first flag ripped, and was replaced with a second, which tore spectacularly into two pieces. The symbolism was not lost on more astute observers: the flag rips on Karabakh's independence day; into a larger and smaller piece; and at the cost of millions of dollars. Want another war, Sultan Aliyev?
