Basescu Sends A Message To Voronin

This time Basescu (left) gets to show Voronin the door.
TEXT SIZE - +
RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports that Romanian President Traian Basescu has tried to drive a nail into President Voronin's political coffin. Or at least limit his options.

"Voronin might remember that I helped him form a majority after elections in the past," Basescu said, "but this time Voronin will not have my support to build a majority in parliament and elect [Moldova's] president."

Basescu had already stoked the fires in a pretty frank interview with RFE/RL ahead of this week's elections. But is he overstating his influence across the border just a tad?

Yes, I think that's what he's doing. But just this time. In 2005, he had influence over Iurie Rosca ( who from a nationalistic Romanina became a communist-ally vice-prime minister.
This time, he does't have the same influence, although he is somehow close ( rather in principles, if not in influence over them ) with PL and PLDM. But he can't make them vote with the communists, even if he would want. Wich he doesn't.
He's just making a risk-free, votes-maker declaration.
About This Blog
Our #moldovavotes blog followed the July 29, 2009 elections through the eyes of RFE/RL correspondents and editors, guest bloggers, and other contributors. The vote was called after the announcement of a lopsided victory by the ruling Communists sparked street protests in April in the capital, Chisinau, that came to be dubbed a "Twitter revolution" in some Western media. Thus the #.
