MINSK -- Organizers of the Belarus Christian Democratic Party’s founding congress are still looking for a place to hold the gathering after being officially refused the use of several venues.

The congress is scheduled for February 28.

Authorities in the Belarusian capital have refused to provide the organizers with a place to hold the congress.

Paval Sevyarynets, the chairman of the party's organizing committee, told RFE/RL that the only option is to hold the gathering outside on October Square in downtown Minsk.

He said the new party will not be an underground organization and, therefore, will be founded in an open and transparent way.
