MINSK -- An opposition activist has been detained in the Belarusian capital for placing posters around Minsk, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Alesya Yasyuk came from the western city of Baranovichi to Minsk to post leaflets urging her country to engage in closer cooperation with Europe.

Police from Minsk's Partyzan district detained her while she was posting leaflets that said "European Belarus."

April 2 is officially marked in Belarus as the day of the Union of Belarus and Russia. The agreement to create the so-called Russian-Belarusian union state was signed in 1996.
