Belarusian Activist Expelled From University

TEXT SIZE - +
BARANAVICHI -- An activist of the Youth Front in the Belarusian city of Baranavichi has been expelled from the local university for his political activities, RFE/RL's Belarusian Service reports.

On May 28, Pyotar Ruzau received the written resolution on his expulsion, signed by the university rector, stating that he was expelled for violating university “discipline.”

Earlier this week, Ruzau was fined by a local court for writing graffiti demanding the immediate release of jailed opposition businessman Mykalay Autukhovich.

Ruzau told RFE/RL that officers of Belarusian State Security (KGB) have been visiting the university since the beginning of the year, warning him that he might be expelled unless he stops his political activities.

The graffiti case might have been the last straw, Ruzau said.
