Police in the western Belarusian city of Brest detained two young activists today.

Andrei Sharenda and Yuras Bakur of the Za Svabodu (For Liberty) movement placed the historic Belarusian national flag -- horizontal stripes of white, red, and white -- on the State Pedagogical University building in Brest and were immediately detained.

The historic red-and-white Belarusian flag was reestablished as the national flag of Belarus in September 1991.

Current President Alyaksandr Lukashenka modified the flag of Soviet Belarus and reestablished it as the country's flag in 1995. It is red, white, and green.
