Bishkek Police Investigate Attack On Synagogue

WATCH: Scenes of a Bishkek synagogue, where an explosive device detonated after it was thrown into the yard during a celebration of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah.

BISHKEK -- Police in the Kyrgyz capital have opened an investigation into an attack on the city synagogue, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Representatives of the Bishkek Police Department told RFE/RL that an unknown person threw an explosive device onto the synagogue's grounds on September 9.

Nobody was reported hurt in the explosion, which caused minor damage to the synagogue.

Police say forensic experts are currently working on determining the substance used in the explosive device.

There are about 1,300 Jews in Kyrgyzstan, the majority of whom live in Bishkek.

On September 8, the Jewish community in Kyrgyzstan started celebrating the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. The celebrations were expected to last until nightfall today.
