British Forces Report Killing Afghan Taliban Leader

TEXT SIZE - +
Britain's Defense Ministry has claimed that its forces killed a powerful Taliban leader in southern Afghanistan, striking a "serious blow" to the insurgency.

The ministry said Mullah Mansur was killed in a strike by helicopters in Helmand Province on June 1.

Helmand government spokesman Daoud Ahmadi said Mansur was the aviation minister in the Taliban regime that was ousted by the U.S.-led invasion in 2001.

British military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson said Mansur was responsible for attacks that had "probably killed or wounded hundreds of people."
