Campaigning For Kurdish Parliamentary Elections Begins

TEXT SIZE - +
BAGHDAD -- Forty-two political parties and dozens of candidates will begin campaigning on April 29 for the 111 seats in the Kurdish region's parliament, RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq (RFI) reports.

Iraq's independent electoral commission in Irbil said Kurdish regional government President Masud Barzani will declare the date of the election at a special session of parliament in a few days.

Four candidates are running for the single Armenian seat in the legislature and three parties are competing for five Turkoman seats, Ali Qadir, the electoral commission president of the Kurdish region, told RFI.

There are also five seats allocated to Chaldean and Assyrian Christians.

Some 2.5 million of Iraq's estimated 4 million Kurds are eligible to vote in the region's three provinces, where 84 polling centers have been set up.
