Car Owners Protest Across Russia Over Tax Increases

TEXT SIZE - +
MOSCOW -- Automobile owners in more than 30 Russian towns and cities are protesting an increase in transportation taxes, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The demonstrations come after the State Duma on November 13 adopted a law that generally will double the costs of such things as vehicle registration, highway fees, and other transport taxes and duties.

The protesters say the move will not help the state budget very much but will increase social tension and spark many more protests.

Sergei Kanayev, an official of Russia's Automobile Owners Federation, told RFE/RL that his organization intends to challenge the Duma decision in the Supreme Court.

He said the proposed volume of the transportation tax violates the Russian Constitution.
