Chechen Woman Sets Herself On Fire In Spain

TEXT SIZE - +
A Chechen woman has set herself on fire in the Spanish town of Alicante, apparently protesting the expulsion of her family from a Red Cross apartment, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The woman is in a serious condition in a Alicante hospital.

A hospital representative, Ignacio de los Rios, told RFE/RL's Russian Service that the woman would most likely survive. Neither her name nor her age were revealed to journalists.

According to RFE/RL's correspondent, the woman is a mother of four and Spanish authorities have twice refused to grant asylum to her family.

The Red Cross had reportedly asked her and members of her family to leave the apartment.

In the last 10 years, Spain has granted hundreds of Chechen families asylum.
