China is calling for efforts to resume dialogue with Iran over its nuclear program, stalling U.S. Secretary Hillary Clinton's efforts to win public commitment for a new round of UN sanctions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, in London for a world conference on Afghanistan, says Iran's nuclear program should be addressed only through diplomacy.

He spoke after meeting with Clinton, who has been working to build support for new sanctions on Iran among members of the UN Security Council.

For her part, the U.S. secretary says Iran has made no efforts to reach a compromise with the international community over its nuclear program, leaving little choice but to apply greater pressure on the Tehran government.
