Police in the Belarusian town of Svetlahorsk have detained two Communist Party activists who were reportedly distributing "anticrisis" brochures and copies of the "Tovarishch" (The Comrade) newspaper, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Valer Rybchanka told RFE/RL from detention that he and Svyatlana Mikhalchanka had not been given any specific reason for their detention.

Rybchanka added that the local police chief was away and therefore none of the officers knew what to do with the detainees.
