NAZRAN, Russia -- A senior police official in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia who was convicted of killing the owner of an independent website has been shot dead, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

An unknown assailant opened fire on two police officials in a cafe in Ingushetia's largest city, Nazran, on August 4. One of the policemen, Ibragim Yevloyev, died at the scene. The second policeman died later in the hospital.

Ibragim Yevloyev was found guilty last year of the unintentional killing of Magomed Yevloyev, the Moscow-based owner of the independent website ingushetia.ru. The two men were not related.

Ibragim Yevloyev received a two-year suspended prison sentence and continued working as a policeman.

Magomed Yevloyev was shot dead in a police car en route from Nazran airport to a police station in August 2008.

His relatives protested the court's ruling last year, saying the killing was not an accident but rather a politically motivated assassination.

Magomed Yevloyev's family released a statement on August 4 denying any part in the shooting of Ibragim Yevloyev.
