MAKHACHKALA, Daghestan -- The assassinated interior minister of the southern Russian Republic of Daghestan, Lieutenant General Adilgirey Magomedtagirov, will be awarded with a Hero of Russia medal, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Magomedtagirov -- who had survived two previous assassination attempts in 2006 and 2007 -- was reportedly shot dead as he entered a restaurant in Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala, on June 5.

Two others were injured in the attack, for which no one has claimed responsibility.

Daghestan is one of the most volatile republics in Russia's North Caucasus and dozens of rebels and government officials have been killed this year.
