AZOV, Russia -- A demonstration was held in the southwestern Russian city of Azov to protest the results of national elections held on October 11, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Activists and supporters of A Just Russia, the Communist Party (KPRF), and Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), as well as those of nongovernmental organizations such as the Peasants Union, the Union of Russia's Cossacks, and the Civic Platform demanded on October 29 the annulment of the election results and the holding of new elections.
The Civic Platform was established after investigations were launched into the
falsification of voters' ballots in Azov earlier this month.
Independent observers found that 298 ballots supporting two candidates from the ruling United Russia party for the mayoral post were illegally added to the voting boxes.
The Civic Platform collected signatures for a petition addressed to President Dmitry Medvedev demanding a change in election laws.
The protest on October 29 was also attended by people from such cities as Rostov-na-Donu, Taganrog, Novocherkassk, and Bataisk.
The petition will also be sent to the State Duma and the prosecutor-general.
Azov is a city of some 85,000 people on the Don River in Rostov Oblast.
