Deputy Mayor In Bashkortostan Jailed For Corruption


SALAVAT, Russia -- The Supreme Court of the Russian republic of Bashkortostan sentenced the former deputy mayor of the town of Salavat to eight years in prison today, RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service reports.

Svetlana Abramova, a member of the Russian prosecutor-general's regional investigative committee, told journalists that Mayor Robert Gilfanov was found guilty of extortion and bribe-taking.

The court also ruled that Gilfanov must pay an 800,000-ruble ($26,600) fine. He was detained in June for taking a 1 million-ruble bribe.
