YEREVAN -- Armenia’s national airline is expected to begin its first-ever direct service to the United States by the end of this year, RFE/RL’s Armenian Service reports, citing Armenian officials.

The new service will be introduced under the terms of a bilateral open-skies agreement that was signed in November and came into force on June 16. Under it, airlines are authorized to operate regular service between any cities of the two countries.

Artyom Movsisian, head of the Armenian Civil Aviation Department, told RFE/RL that Armavia intends to introduce service to New York and Los Angeles.

A team from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration will arrive in Yerevan soon to inspect Armenian facilities and safety practices.

Armavia is a private carrier providing service to 26 destinations in Europe, Russia, and the Middle East.
