MAKHACHKALA, Daghestan -- Eight insurgents were killed by security forces in Daghestan in shoot-outs late on July 27, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The clash took place in a forest not far from Makhachkala, the capital of the North Caucasus republic of Daghestan.  No casualties among the police were reported.

Dozens of security forces, government officials, and insurgents have been killed in Daghestan and neighboring Ingushetia in assassinations and shoot-outs this year.
