Five Wounded Leaving Daghestani Mosque

Five people, including an imam, were wounded when unknown attackers fired on them as they were leaving a mosque after Friday evening prayers in the village of Aksai in the Russian republic of Daghestan.

Police said a vehicle drove toward the five as they left the mosque and opened fire on them then fled.

The five were said to be in a hospital in serious condition.

Insurgent violence has been simmering in Daghestan, a North Caucasus republic plagued by poverty, corruption, and rising Islamist extremism.

The republic’s new president, Magomedsalam Magomedov, has promised to bring order to Daghestan and offered to pardon rebels who turn in their weapons.
