Ex-Ombudsman Takes Step Toward Kyrgyz Presidential Bid

BISHKEK (RFE/RL) -- The political council of Kyrgyzstan's opposition Free Kyrgyzstan party has put forward leader Tursunbai Bakir uulu's name for consideration as a presidential candidate by an upcoming party congress, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported.

Presidential elections are scheduled for July 23, with incumbent Kurmanbek Bakiev expected to seek reelection.

Bakir uulu told RFE/RL that the party plenum was scheduled to discuss the offer on May 3.

The deadline for registration of presidential candidates is May 12.

Bakir uulu is a former ombudsman who is also among the leaders of the Union of Muslims of Kyrgyzstan.
