Georgia, South Ossetia Trade Shelling Accusations

TBILISI -- Georgia's Interior Ministry has alleged that a police checkpoint along the South Ossetian administrative border came under "intense fire" on July 29 from the breakaway region's capital, Tskhinvali.

Authorities in South Ossetia responded by saying that Georgian military forces had fired two mortar rounds in the direction of Tskhinvali.

No casualties were reported on either side.

The Georgian Interior Ministry statement says the barrage, targeting police in the village of Nikozi, began around 11:30 p.m. local time and lasted for an hour.

The ministry said it included mortar and machine-gun fire.
