TBILISI -- Former Georgian United Nations envoy Irakli Alasania has announced the formation of the opposition group Alliance for Georgia and immediately issued an ultimatum for a referendum on Mikheil Saakashvili's presidency, RFE/RL's Georgian Service reports.

Alasania accused Saakashvili of "lack[ing] the political will to make the right decision in the current situation and resign."

He said his new opposition coalition will give Saakashvili 10 days to announce a referendum asking if an early presidential election should be held, after which the opposition will appeal directly to the public.

A coalition of Georgia's New Rightists and Republican parties, the Alliance For Georgia's motto is "We build our future today."

Alasania will chair the group, with New Rightist leader David Gamkrelidze and Republican Party head David Usupashvili as cochairmen.
