Georgia's Gori District Successfully Demined

GORI -- Demining work in Georgia's Gori district has been completed, RFE/RL's Georgian Service reports.

The work was conducted by the international humanitarian organization HALO Trust.

The last of the district's 143 villages, Megvrekisi, was declared to be free of mines today after some 270 hectares in and around the village were checked and 282 cluster-bomb fragments were removed.

The Gori district of Georgia's Shida Kartli Province and Tskhinvali -- the capital of Georgia's breakaway South Ossetia region -- were the most affected during the five-day, Russian-Georgian military conflict in August 2008.

The U.S. government allocated $4 million for demining Shida Kartli Province, where the work will continue.
