ASHGABAT -- A delegation led by General David Petraeus, the head of the U.S. Central Command, made a visit to Ashgabat, RFE/RL's Turkmen Service reports.

William Stievens, the U.S Embassy in Ashgabat spokesman, told RFE/RL that the aim of the August 14 visit was to discuss ongoing and future military cooperation between U.S. Central Command and Turkmenistan.

Stievens said the delegation met with representatives from the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry, and State Border Services.

The visit was reportedly part of the U.S. officials' regularly scheduled visit to Central Asian countries, but Washington has been seeking closer military cooperation with Turkmenistan.
