India Enforces Curfew In Violence-Wracked Kashmir

TEXT SIZE - +
Indian security forces are on high alert in Kashmir today and have threatened to shoot anyone defying a rigid curfew imposed on the Indian-controlled region, one day after 19 people were killed in battles between troops and protesters.

The region has been roiled for months by separatist protests that have often descended into violence, with nearly 90 killed this summer.

The protests were apparently inflamed this weekend by erroneous reports that the Koran had been desecrated in the United States.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and fully claimed by both.
