MAGAS -- The political opposition in Russia's Republic of Ingushetia is calling for an extraordinary assembly of Ingushetia's peoples and the appointment of former President Ruslan Aushev as interim president of the republic, RFE/RL's North Caucasus and Russian services report.
Ingushetia's current president, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, was severely injured in an apparent
assassination attempt on June 22.
An opposition leader, Magomed Khazbiev, told RFE/RL an organizing committee for the Seventh Assembly of Ingushetia's Peoples has been established and the date of the gathering will be announced soon.
Aushev, who was Ingushetia's president between March 1993 and December 2001, has declared his readiness to run the republic while Yevkurov is recovering.
On June 24, Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov visited the Ingushetian capital, Magas, and harshly criticized Aushev. Kadyrov said that only he is able to "bring order to Ingushetia."
The opposition says Kadyrov's involvement in Ingushetia's affairs might lead to wider war in the Caucasus.
