BISHKEK -- Russian officials say an insurgent killed by security forces in the Russian republic of Daghestan was carrying a Kyrgyz passport, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Kyrgyz Ambassador to Russia Raimkul Attokurov told RFE/RL that the insurgent was shot dead in the capital, Makhachkala, on December 1 during an attack on a police station.

Daghestan's Interior Ministry says that the name in the man's passport was Karibekov Beksultan and the date of birth 1982.

Attokurov said the embassy is seeking to confirm the nationality of the man and the legality of the Kyrgyz passport he carried.

Three police were also wounded during the shoot-out.

Tens of thousands of people from Daghestan were deported to Kyrgyzstan by Josef Stalin during World War II.
