TEXT SIZE - +
MAKHACHKALA, Daghestan -- Police and security forces in Makhachkala, the capital of the Russian republic of Daghestan, reported killing an armed insurgent after he resisted arrest today, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Daghestan's Interior Ministry told journalists that the man opened fire on police before he was killed in the ensuing shoot-out.

Officials said the insurgent, identified as Abdul Mirzakhanov, was wanted for his alleged involvement in previous attacks against police.

No casualties were reported among police.

Hundreds of police, government officials, and insurgents have died this year in Daghestan and other neighboring republics in Russia's volatile North Caucasus.
