BAGHDAD -- The U.S. government has indicated its willingness consider Iraq’s request that the UN Security Council probe the August 19 bombings that killed 95 people, RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq reports.

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told a Baghdad seminar that Iraq has been seeking the support of the five permanent Security Council members for its call to set up an independent commission to investigate the attacks.

"It is not an easy task," Zebari said, "especially considering the U.S. position, which is more or less noncommittal on the issue."

However, he said he had indications that a senior U.S. official might be named to look into the matter.

Iraq has accused Syria of complicity in the attacks.
