BAGHDAD -- Iraq's parliament will try again today to hold an emergency debate on next month's elections.

Iraqi lawmakers are due to examine a controversial decision to overturn a ban on candidates suspected of links to the Ba'ath Party of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government has called the judicial panel's decision illegal and recalled parliament.

Iraqi lawmakers were to convene on February 7, but only 75 of parliament's 275 legislators turned up.

Shi'a political parties, meanwhile, staged demonstrations in several cities on February 7 to express opposition to overturning the ban.
