ALMATY -- The former head of Kazakhstan's state nuclear corporation, KazAtomProm, who has been in jail since May, was hospitalized on October 19, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Mukhtar Dzhakishev's wife, Dzhamilya Dzhakisheva, told RFE/RL that the leading investigator of her husband's case, Vladimir Petrovsky, informed her on October 18 that Dzhakishev was brought to the Republican Clinic in Astana for treatment of high blood pressure and that his condition is currently good.

Dzhakishev and several of his associates were arrested in May on corruption charges and placed in the National Security Committee's jail in Astana.

Dzhakishev's supporters say the charges are politically motivated.
