BISHKEK (RFE/RL) -- The first Belarusian-made trolleybus has arrived in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

The city of over 1 million people has no subway or tram system, and its citizens are currently heavily reliant on taxis and minibuses.

Bishkek city authorities plan to order 20 more of the Belarusian vehicles once the first is operating successfully.

Bishkek officials in April signed an agreement to purchase the trolleybuses during a visit to the plant in Minsk.

Representatives from the Bishkek mayor's office said they will pay for the trolleybuses in installments over the next three to five years.
