BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan's League for Children's Rights has kicked off an event two weeks ahead of the new school year demanding equal opportunities for the country's children to get an education, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

League Chairwoman Nazgul Turdubekova told RFE/RL that many parents are not able to provide their children with proper preparations for tests, tuition fees, school uniforms, and textbooks.

According to her, families with lower incomes should get financial support from the government for their children's education.

Kyrgyzstan is one of the poorest countries to emerge from the former Soviet Union.
