Kyrgyz Opposition Leader Hospitalized After Beating

OSH, Kyrgyzstan -- A leader of the opposition Ata-Meken (Fatherland) party in the southern city of Osh remains in serious condition after being severely beaten, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Abdykaim Kangeldiev was attacked by unknown assailants near his house on April 3.

Osh hospital officials told RFE/RL that he was transferred to a neurology clinic on April 5 and may need to undergo brain surgery.

Doctors say Kangeldiev has a large cranial hematoma and numerous other bodily injuries.

His relatives say he is still unconscious.
