Kyrgyz Opposition Singer In Hiding After Abduction

July 29, 2009
BISHKEK -- Prominent Kyrgyz singer Sagynbek Mombekov says he was abducted and threatened ahead of a performance at an opposition rally, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Mombekov, who is a member of the United People's Movement and sings several songs with antigovernment lyrics, said that he was abducted on July 27 in Talas Oblast, where he was scheduled to perform at an opposition rally on July 29.

He added that he received death threats and was told to stay away from Talas for a few days before he was released. Mombekov said he has gone into hiding.

His relatives said that they are concerned about his safety. Local police officials and the Interior Ministry say they do not have any information regarding Mombekov's alleged abduction.

Local district deputy police chief Bakyt Berdaly said that Mombekov is probably having fun at some party away from home.

The United People's Movement has called for people to protest on July 29 against the presidential election results, which they say were fixed by the government.
