AKSY, Kyrgyzstan -- Residents and officials in the western Kyrgyz village of Bay-Kyshtak stopped Uzbek excavators from digging a trench along the disputed Kyrgyz-Uzbek border, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Aksy District Governor Talant Orozov told RFE/RL that Uzbek border guards with excavation equipment entered the village and began digging a ditch on the village’s territory.
Eleven segments of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border in the Aksy district are in dispute.
The Central Asian states have been at odds with each other over their state borders since the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, and the process of demarcating borders has moved slowly.
