Kyrgyzstan's top election official says that "a wave of mistakes" is holding up the release of the final tally from parliamentary elections held earlier this month.

Local news website 24.kg quotes Akylbek Sariyev, chief of the Central Election Commission (CEC), as saying on October 28 that "the CEC has to correct the mistakes made by local electoral commission members. We are trying to complete this process as quickly as possible. However, this will happen neither today nor tomorrow."

The statement comes as supporters of the nationalist Ata-Zhurt party, which won the most votes in already released preliminary results, have staged nearly daily protests to demand the release of the official results.
