MOSCOW -- The website of one of Russia's most popular daily newspapers, "Moskovsky komsomolets," has been severely damaged by a cyberattack, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Pavel Gusev, editor in chief of the newspaper, told RFE/RL that the damage from the December 3 attack is estimated to be millions of rubles.

He said huge amounts of data, unique photos, and video footage that had been compiled and worked on for years by several journalists was lost in the attack.

"Altogether, the work of almost 5,000 professionals was destroyed," Gusev said.

He added that the cyberattack seems to have been organized and carried out by professionals, and that it's possible that either the secret services or ultranationalist groups could be responsible.
