Medvedev Nominates New Daghestan President

MOSCOW -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has nominated university professor Magomedsalam Magomedov to be the new president of the republic of Daghestan in the volatile North Caucasus region, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Daghestan's current president, Mukhu Aliyev, will end his presidential term on February 20.

The Russian president's office added that Medvedev also nominated Lev Kuznetsov as the governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Natalya Komarova as the governor of the Khanty-Mansiisk Autonomous Okrug, and Aleksandr Vinnikov as the governor of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast.

The nominations must be approved by the regional legislatures to become official.
