Medvedev Visits Wounded Ingushetian President In Hospital

Medvedev and Yevkurov meeting in Moscow in May

July 21, 2009
MOSCOW -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has visited Ingushetian President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov at the Moscow hospital where he is recovering from multiple injuries he received in a car bomb attack last month, RFE/RL's North Caucasus Service reports.

Medvedev expressed satisfaction that Yevkurov, who is now able to walk, is "over the worst" of the ordeal and will soon be able to resume his presidential duties.

Yevkurov was injured on June 22 in a bomb attack that killed four others.

On July 18, Yevkurov spoke by phone with Chechen Republic President Ramzan Kadyrov, who told Interfax the two leaders will closely follow the progress of a special operation by the Chechen and Ingush interior ministries against Islamic militants and other unspecified "problems that require a joint solution."

A wave of kidnappings, bomb attacks, and assassinations has made Ingushetia the most violent republic in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region.
