CHISINAU -- A street in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, has been renamed after late Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash in Russia exactly seven months ago, RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports.
Today's ceremony in downtown Chisinau was attended by many officials, including the ambassadors of Poland and Russia.
Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, a member of Moldova's ruling pro-Western Alliance for European Integration, said Kaczynski would remain an example of "consistency in the fight for democracy."
"Today we in Moldova are following [Kaczynski's] path," Chirtoaca said.
Poland has been active in bringing former Soviet republics like Moldova, Belarus, and Ukraine closer to the European Union within the EU's Eastern Partnership program.
Georgian officials earlier this year renamed a street in Tbilisi after Kaczynski, who was a strong supporter of Georgia during its military conflict with Russia in 2008.
Moldova will hold parliamentary elections on November 28.
