MOSCOW -- Moscow city authorities are refusing to allow the Russian opposition coalition Other Russia to hold a demonstration, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Other Russia's leaders and activists planned to hold the so-called "meeting of dissent" on Moscow's Triumfalnaya Square on August 31.

A member of Other Russia's executive committee, Aleksandr Averin, told RFE/RL that officials explained their refusal by saying that another public event is planned on the square on the same day.

Averin said opposition activists and their supporters will gather on the square anyway to support the right of citizens to hold mass gatherings.

On July 31, despite a similar refusal by Moscow authorities, activists from Other Russia gathered on Triumfalnaya Square. Dozens of protesters were then detained for holding an unsanctioned gathering.
