Mr. Reagan, Meet Mr. Putin

Courtesy Ronald Reagan Library

March 16, 2009
Hey! Who's that dour-looking dude on the left?

There's a 20-year-old photo making the rounds on the tubes showing U.S. President Ronald Reagan taking a stroll through Red Square during his May 1988 visit to Moscow.

In the photo, Reagan was approached by a group of "tourists" -- who were in reality KGB members and their families -- who asked him about human rights in the United States.

Reagan's photographer, Pete Souza, told NPR in January that he has confirmed that the blonde-haired man in the striped shirt on the left was none other than Vladimir Putin, then a KGB colonel.

You can listen to Souza, who is now U.S. President Barack Obama's official photographer, talk about the photo by clicking the audio link in the NPR story here.

And then decide for yourself whether it really is Putin.

UPDATE: Compare with photos of young Putin and Putin with family.

Why do you say "dour looking"? Is there one person in the photo who looks jolly by comparison?

By the way, when are you going to change your tagline? "unfree societies" I can understand why you "Russophobes" would like think that Russia is "unfree" but I would think that the Saakaphiles would object to Georgia being on the list.

Yeah, that guy with the cam is too good-looking to resemble weasel-faced Putin.

If Souza is talking about the guy with a camera then he doesnt look like Putin. Putin has a very peculiar shape to his nose (see especially the 1988 picture at link "Putin with family"). This guy has a straight nose. Also Putin has thinner hair and smaller chin.

On the other hand, the guy in middle with glasses and two nametags is unmistakenly Rudy Perina, who was then NSC Director for European and USSR affairs.

Don't you have anything better to write about? This seems a total waste of tax payer's money. Fire the damn editor who allowed this to get put on the web - and get back to writing serious journalism. I could get something dumb like this at a supermarket check-out.
