GROZNY -- Five policemen and four local citizens were wounded by an explosion in the Chechen city of Shali on August 27, RFE/RL's correspondent reports.

Two suspected insurgents were blocked by police in a house in Shali. They refused to surrender and detonated apparent explosive devices.

The two suspects were identified as Adam Ustarkhanov and Sayhan Ospanov. Police had been searching for both individuals for some time for participating in illegal armed groups.

A police investigation of last night's events in Shali is under way.
