Ayatollah Ahmad Janati: no offer of friendship for Obama
TEXT SIZE - +
After Barack Obama's speech reaching out to the Muslim world, many in the Middle East have responded by challenging him to match words with action. But few have been as succinctly dismissive of Obama's promises as Ayatollah Ahmad Janati, the head of Iran's Guardians Council.

Speaking at Friday prayers in Tehran, Janati said: "As soon as you [Obama] can say 'soap' and your mouth starts bubbling, that's when you’ll be able to say 'change' and rid the Muslim people of hatred."

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus. The name recognizes RFE/RL's role as a surrogate broadcaster to places without free media. You can write us at transmission+rferl.org
