BUDAPEST (Reuters) -- A student has opened fire at a university in the southern Hungarian city of Pecs, killing one student and wounding three other people, university and police officials said.

The perpetrator, a 23-year-old man, has been detained and is being questioned, police spokeswoman Bernadett Bojtor said, adding that his motive was so far unknown.

"He ran across to a nearby clinic, and gave himself up in a phone call," she said. "He used a handgun, but I cannot specify the exact type or where he got it from."

Zoltan Gyorffy, press chief of Pecs University, told Reuters the shooting happened at the biophysics research institute and the attacker was a pharmacology student.

The student had opened fire and killed a classmate. Another student, a teacher and a cleaner were seriously hurt.

"Both the attacker and the victim were Hungarians," Gyorffy said. International students also attend the university.

Ambulance spokesman Pal Gyorfi confirmed that one person died after the attack, one man sustained life-threatening injuries, while another two people were seriously wounded.

"We do not yet know what led to this horrendous crime," Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai said in a statement. "Nobody could prepare for this. But this cannot prevent us doing our best to avoid similar tragedies."
